Hey gang, been a while...

I just discovered something, maybe it's just me, but wanted to see if there's other weirdos like me out there. I was listening to a song on headphones, and was trying to identify the individual instruments and how they were placed in the mix. Drums were panned hard L&R ( :hp: ) and it sounded like there were two hihats both right (correct) and left (incorrect) . It was then that I discovered that by turning my eyes left, I could hear clearly that the sound on the left was a tambourine, and the sound on the right, the hihat. Not only that, by using my eyes left and right (I also did this eyes closed, it doesn't make a difference), I discovered that I could hear details that I wasn't able to hear with my eyes straight forward. I've been doing this job 20 odd years now, and I've never noticed this before.

And, no, I'm not high...

One of the first lessons I was given when I started working in post was to compare two mixes for a music video. One had been supplied by the label and the other had been mixed from stems by my boss while watching the picture on a pretty big screen. The minute you turned the TV picture off, the mix from the label sounded way better. The excitement level totally reversed when you turned the picture on. I think most artists would shit bricks if they knew how much vision affects hearing and musical perception.
