What are the typical scenarios when you do?
Is it only when you need to make a quick mix and the vocalist is too dynamic so usual compressor won't cut it?

something like that...
if it's the sort of thing where you don't want to hear any compression on a vocal, but the vocal has a lot of movement, or the track has a lot of competing movement in dynamics, you might START with Vocal Rider and then tweak automation after that.

I think I paid $79 for it when it was fairly new.
It's kind of amazing to me. Imagine going back 20 years and being the only one who had it.
Sure, you have to tweak the track afterward, but it speeds things up quite a bit in cases where the vocal is dynamicky and competing with in-your-face guitars (or whatever). Especially for someone like me, because my fader moves have been kind of sloppy, not having had that much practice.
I recently did my first fader move that I didn't have to edit later, and I felt pretty triumphant about it
