Mastered for Youtube

Post by keks »

Hey Dudes and Dudettes,
my children song duo just recorded a live gig and we want to put some videos on youtube for booking reference.
Now, how do I prepare audio and video for the inadvertable mangling of yt-compression?
Are there any good sites with reliable info out there?

All the best,
the keks

Just make sure nothing peaks above - 1 so it can't clip the encoding.

Ian Shepherd has done your homework for you. :stg:
The tl;dr version:
Master no louder than -9 LUFS short-term at the loudest moments
(with True Peaks no higher than -1)
I strongly recommend you read this page for the reasoning behind the quote:

And this page to see how loud Youtube thinks a clip is:

PS:
For the video side, this is a good read:

Just recently went through the same thing, deciding how to present the audio for Youtube.

I think aside from not overcompressing/ limiting, the main thing is making sure that the video format you're uploading isn't limiting the quality of the audio. I hadn't actually realised how much there was to that side of it.
